Bayou Boogaloo

My favorite festival in New Orleans was held last month. Bayou Boogaloo started as a small show of resilience for the Mid City neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina. Now, 15 years later Bayou Boogaloo is a major city celebration. Three days of music, food, and art on the banks of Bayou Saint John.

check out some throw back photos of years past. i think maybe 2012 when myself and some neighbors built a raft and drove it over to the bayou.

It always brings me joy to see folks out on Bayou St John. Such a unique asset to have a waterway in the heart of the city. During Bayou Boogaloo the Bayou is filled with water crafts of all kinds. Canoes, kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards, rafts, giant inflatable unicorns.

This year a 100% refundable permit was required for any group launching home made rafts. Unfortunately in pervious years some folks abandoned their raft after the party and left the clean up cost to the non-profit that puts on the celebration. This year went smoothly, every group received their deposit back and no home made rafts were abandoned.

Bayou Boogaloo it celebrates bayou St John but also because it introduces the idea of canoeing to folks who may not have otherwise thought of it. My hope is more and more ppl enjoy Bayou St John. And hey, perhaps some of them will be comfortable to join my tours some day.

Speaking of trips.

All the trips are four days and three nights on a spectacular river. Sleeping under the stars, eating great meals, and meeting amazing people. All the tours are fully outfitted with all gear, equipment, food, and me as your guide :)

As always if you have questions or ideas about the trips shoot me a message here w the contact form or on Instagram @bd_markey

Hope to see you on the river,
